About Us

Southwest Lawns was founded in 1986 by Richard Furman after retiring from a sixteen-year career as a professional musician. Through classes at Cheekwood Gardens, Architecture at Peabody University, TSU course studies in landscape management, turf, ornamentals and working with notable mentors, he gained the ability to approach his business in a responsible and naturally sustainable way.

Cindy Furman came on board in 1996, after a long career in the music industry. Cindy started as Southwest Lawn’s office manager. Trained by Richard in landscape techniques, design and sustainable organic gardening, she took over the company after Richard’s passing. Education includes classes at Cheekwood Gardens, TSU course studies in landscape management, turf, ornamentals and working with notable mentors. Cindy enjoyed serving her community as a Co-Chairman of Early Connections Network, The TN Council/Strategic Planning Committee/Evaluation Committee/Family Support. She also served as a Parent Representative for Tennessee Aware/State Management Team Department of Education, and as Cheatham County Representative for the Full Partnership/Childhood Development Coordination team.

James Furman started an early career in organic farming. Developing purely organic treatments for local pests, floral and shrubbery diseases, James earned accolades from State Systems biology and environmental leaders by the age of 18. Working side-by-side with our lawn and landscape technicians, he understands the diversity of each individual job along with an onsite understanding of the technicians and customer’s needs. James believes that “…learning a business from the ground up affords a deep understanding of its daily management and overall success.” His certifications in progress include course studies in turf management, horticulture, ornamentals, design, pest control and landscaping.

Utilizing both the traditional and organic horticulture approaches, we are able to better serve all of our customer’s needs.
